The Right Equipment

Scuba gear may well be the most important part of any scuba diving vacation. Without the right gear, your dream vacation may go south. Generally, if you are really into scuba diving, you can save money by traveling with your own gear rather than renting it when you reach your destination. Renting equipment can be quite costly, and after several trips, you would have paid the equivalent of the cost of your own equipment.

Required Equipment

First, you need a mask to provide good visibility underwater. Using goggles is not sufficient when you are diving to deep areas because of the increased pressure created as you descend. You will also need a snorkel; a good snorkel can help you conserve the air in your tank while you are near the surface.

Next, you must have fins. If you are thirty feet underwater without them, you won’t be going anywhere. You will also want a wetsuit suited to the climate in which you are diving. For colder climates, you will want dive boots, mitts, and a hood; these accessories can help keep you warm in dangerously cold waters.

A Buoyancy Control Device (BCD) is also needed to help you maintain buoyancy while at the surface and underwater. Your most important piece of equipment is your regulator; the regulator will allow you to breath air from your tank at a low pressure.

Finally, you will want to have filled and checked your tanks. Additionally, you need a weight belt--or weight pockets in your BCD--and enough weights to help keep you underwater. Many divers choose to rent their tanks, which are bulky, and weights, which are heavy, at their destination; neither are particularly expensive to rent, and their quality and fit is not as important as that of the other equipment.

Finding the Best Equipment

In order to find the best equipment, you should visit online scuba diving websites and scuba diving stores in your city. Online forums can offer a lot of information as to which manufacturers make the safest, most reliable equipment for the best prices. Your equipment determines your safety on your scuba diving vacation, and you should spend whatever it takes to ensure your safety.

Renting Your Equipment

If you are not ready to commit to purchasing scuba diving gear, you will have to rent from the company you are working with or a nearby scuba store. Verify that the scuba company or store has a good reputation and that they fully understand the type of equipment needed for your specific dive.
